1.2 Fresh Start

Claire didn’t have to rush to pack her bags. Her mother, Elizabeth, was out sponsoring the big city’s triathlon, and her father was out at work. She stood in her brightly pink room and neatly folded clothes into her suitcase. She was eighteen now, and there was nothing stopping her.

However, she couldn’t just leave mysteriously. Claire’s mother would come home to find her missing, which would cause great chaos. She’d call Claire’s father, John, and he would immediately get people to look for her. They would get the authorities involved and family connections would all be on the lookout for her. That couldn’t be her plan.

After months of planning and doing research, Claire had a scheme that would play out perfectly.

“Good evening mother.”

“Good evening,” Elizabeth answered coldly, never revealing any emotions behind her glass-like expression.

“Mother, would you have a minute to speak. It’s important.”

“Make it quick, I have to be at city hall for an important meeting with the governor. Now what is it?” She asked impatiently.

“I received a letter from the board of SimCityUniversity. I’ve been accepted into their program.”

“Oh dear, I’m just chuffed as nuts! I need to chivvy along though! I’ll tell your father the news when he’s done with clients.” Claire hated the way her mother’s heavy British accent filled the room. She used old sayings and expressions that the rest of the average person couldn’t understand.

Claire cut her off abruptly. “Mother there is more to it. This University is across the country. I will be staying there for every session. It’s a private establishment that already provides the students with dormitories.”

“Wonderful! I’ll write out the check whenever you need it.”

“I need it now. I’m leaving in less than a week.” Her words cut off Elizabeth’s movements.

“Darling can we talk about this later? I need to carry on now.”

Claire took a deep breath, trying to stay calm. “Mother, you can write out the check later, after the first few sessions. I’m leaving in three days. The flight is already booked.”

Without asking for too much information, Claire’s parents kissed her goodbye at the airport. She was surprised to see that both her parents had finally taken some time off just to be able to say their goodbyes.

“Darling, your father and I will be out most of the night, however you can leave a message to the maid, and she’ll transfer to us!” Elizabeth hurried through last-minute explanations.

“Mother, my flight is only leaving in a few hours.”

John, her father, interrupted their conversation. “Dear, we need to get going. My boss called me in and I must be at the office before noon.”

Her mother added, “It’s my turn to sponsor the Alcohol Anonymous meeting therefore I need to get going as well. This flight will be a piece of cake.”

Both her parents gave her a cold, awkward hug and started walking away. “Goodbye dear, phone us once you’ve arrived to the school.”

Claire sat waiting in the large airport. She watched as both her parents hurriedly walked themselves out. Her mother’s high heels clacking along the shining floors and her father fixing his gelled back hair and adjusting the buttons to his tuxedo. Once again, she was left alone. No one ever had time for her. But on the other hand, her plan seemed to play out even easier than expected.

The flight to Appaloosa Plains was quiet. Finally arriving into the small town, Claire walked among the misty streets. This was an environment completely different for her. The lights of the big city were far away; no more noise of the traffic and the smell of pollution. She walked through streets, some not even having sidewalks. There were healthy green trees here, and freshly cut grass. The air was fresh and soothing upon her young skin.

For a second, she completely forgot about her life at home. She didn’t care about her mother’s heavy accent, or the way her father dismissed her all the time. In this world, it was no longer about her past, but about her present. This is going to take some time getting use to. Claire thought to herself as she now stood in front of her future.

  1. I like this chapter very much. Her parents seem to not care much about her. I can’t help but imagine them dying in a mysterious accident.

    Great Start!

    1. LOL! This isn’t a laughing matter.. though I found your last few words quiet funny! 😉

  2. Oh wow! For some reason, even in the last chapter it said that her parents never really cared or paid attention to her, I didn’t think it was like that. Her parents don’t deserve to have children. At least she got away! And she is starting anew. Can’t wait for more! 🙂

    1. Hopefully she’ll be able to raise her kids better than her parents did!

  3. Wow, her parents are very cold. They blow her off and treat her like another business asset or something.

I loved it, very well written!

When I stop being lazy I’ll add it to my blogroll! 😀

    1. Stop being lazy! Hehe
      Thanks for commenting 🙂

  4. Good for her getting away from her parents. I love Appalousa Plains (one of my legacies is there) and can’t wait to see what she gets up to there.

  5. I hate her parents >.> It’s like they don’t even see her as their daughter.
Wait.. maybe she isn’t 0.o Or did she get the hair from her grandparents maybe? =D
I’m really exited to see how Claire is going to fare on her own!

  6. Her parents are very cold and indifferent. Her mother in particular. And this new life she will be making for herself will be very different from the one she is used to.

    Great chapter.

  7. Claire’s parents are very cold, and seem to not care for her. To them, she is some business deal that doesn’t deserve much of their time, or attention. I feel bad for Claire, but I’m glad she came up with a clever plan to get out of this situation. I wonder what her parents will say when “university” is over, and their daughter is NOT coming home!

Great chapter! I can’t wait to see what Claire does in Appaloosa Plains! 😀

    1. I like your thinking! Claire’s plan worked for now… But then what!? hehe

  8. Nice start to your legacy. It’s always hard when a child grows up hardly knowing their parents. Not sure if you’ve been there already but wickichick’s thread in the forums, ‘What’s happening in your Sim stories today is a great place to share stories and make new friends and you are welcome to join us. Feel free to read any of my legacies here on wordpress. The pictures are scattered thru Wicki’s thread and on photobucket.

    Nice to meet you,
    Silver

    1. You’re right, it IS difficult growing up in such a cold environment. I’ve heard of that thread before and I’ll definitely give it a look! Thanks for sharing it with me 🙂

  9. A new start, and from that farewell I say she could do with it. At least her parents had time to say goodbye!

Her parents clearly don’t care! My parents would never let me leave like that haha….so my advice to her is to make sure that cheque is for 10x more than she needs 🙂

  11. This is a very lovely start! I”m dying to read more! I like that you started the legacy off in a different manner. There was no plopping a sim down in front of an empty lot and doing away with the parents in some way. You showed a past that normally is not shown in legacies. I like that her parents are still alive although they are distant. It really helps to add depth to the characters when you show instead of tell their story. I’m really excited to find out who Claire meets and what kind of adventures she will have in her new life. She’s very pretty by the way and so is her mom. Good luck with your story and I will definitely be following this!

    1. Thank you so much for all your kind words! I’m glad you like Claire as much as I do! 🙂
Her parents are definitely still alive… Though they think she’s off to college! I don’t think they’ll be so distant once they find out the truth! 😉

  12. Ugh! Her parents are so cold towards her! I can’t even imagine the tension there must be when all three are in the same room. I wonder how Claire will pull through in her further relationships, either with loved ones, or with friends, seeing as she never got the actual feel of one.

Excited to see how she will be on her own! Great update. ^.^

  13. Oh, you’ve switched out of first person! (In honesty, all the more reason to like it IMO). I love that you’re writing it in the style of a book (a practice dear to my hear, may I add :P). Again, in most cases book style irks me for some reason, but your legacy is one of the few that I can stand. That’s actually a giant compliment believe it or not XD keep up the good work 🙂

    1. I’m glad you liked the transition! Personally, I wanted to try something different and more challenging, so I went into third person! I find it’ll make it easier afterwards for the readers to understand everyone’s thoughts and point of views.
I really appreciate your kind words, and it’s an honor for me to be one of those legacies that you “can stand” 🙂

  14. Hmmm. I’m curious to know why Claire moved around so much. In the first person chapter, she mentioned that she didn’t know the reason, so it seemed like a mystery. Is Claire going to learn more about her family once she escaped it, or was that a red herring? I wonder. Heh.

    1. She’ll definitely learn more about her family and their past! I don’t want to spoil when however…!

  15. Her parents are ridiculous-being alone will be very good. I hope Appaloosa Plains doesn’t bring too much trouble!

  16. Woo! I’m excited to read more ;D

  17. Love this chapter, Claire is so strong for doing this. It’s hard seeing her lie to her parents but in this case I understand it completely, poor Claire. I am so excited to see what lays in wait for in in Appaloosa Plains. It’s going to be exciting! Lovely chapter, you are a very talented writer.

    1. Thank you so much! I love your feedback! 🙂
And yes you’re right… It’s bad to lie! But there are the exceptions…

I’m glad that she’s able to get away from her parents… They are jerks.

  19. Another lovely chapter! I really like your screenshots–the angled one of her parents walking out of the airport just gave me chills. I can’t wait to see what Claire does with this legacy! 😀

  20. Very interesting start! You have a very good way with pairing dialogue with your pictures…I can’t wait to see what happens to Claire next. 🙂

  21. Glad to see Claire gets to start her own life.

  22. She seems like a strong, independent young woman but I’m afraid her past might make it troublesome for her making friends. Let’s hope I’m wrong!

    1. She’ll definitely have to adapt! Thanks for commenting! 🙂

  23. Wow, her parents are snobs! I really like the start and I think her university story is going to come crashing down on her. Thanks for commenting on mine and I will definatly add you to my blog roll, once I get round to it. Claires really pretty by the way. Are you British too?

    1. I’m far from being British, I’m actually french Canadian!
And of course her lie about the University will only last for so long…
Thank you for commenting and I’ll follow and add you to my blogroll as well a soon as I go on with my pc 🙂

  24. Good start 🙂 I can’t wait to see what happens next! Claire seems a very nice girl, despite the way she has been raised!

  25. Another wonderful chapter to come after the first! Claire seems to be taking her life in her own hands. Her parents…Im not sure how they even had the time to conceive her with all they have to do and their lack of attention. I look forward to reading more about them and their mysterious life and why they are the way they are in the future.
    For now, Im just happy that Claire was able to start her own life. :}
